Although Seven Acres is off the beaten track, the amenities (including several good pubs and restaurants) of Coltishall are all within easy walking distance. Within a few minutes’ walk of Seven Acres, you can ride on the narrow-gauge Bure Valley Steam Railway. If you enjoy walking and/or cycling (bicycles may be hired locally) there is an eight mile cycle/footpath running alongside the track as well as tree-lined walks along the river. Fishing is available within a short walking distance from Seven Acres.
Seven Acres is particularly well placed for the Broads : three miles away is Wroxham from where there is a variety of boat trips - or hire a dayboat and cruise at leisure with a picnic. The North Norfolk coast, with its fine sandy beaches, fishing villages, bird sanctuaries and coastal footpaths is an easy drive. Eight miles away is Norwich with its two cathedrals, numerous ancient churches, Castle Museum and medieval Elm Hill not to mention its theatres, excellent shopping and restaurants. The quaint old town of Holt, a “must” for those with a passion for browsing around antique shops is also not far away.
Several National Trust properties are within easy reach, including Jacobean Blickling Hall with its lovely gardens and vast park (in addition to the usual NT facilities, Blickling has a plant nursery and a good second-hand bookshop). Sandringham is an hour’s drive away as are Houghton Hall and Holkham Hall, two magnificent Palladian mansions.
Garden lovers may also wish to explore the justly famous 30 acre gardens of The Old Vicarage at East Ruston, another short drive away, or Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden with its superb view across South Walsham Inner Broad where you can enjoy a boat trip.
